Dan Wood speaks to us from Senegal, where bond-market volatility has spiked due to the declaration of a previously hidden stockpile of government debt.
Transcript
I’m here in Dakar, Senegal, to investigate the recent volatility in Senegal’s Eurobond market. Volatility has spiked due to the declaration of a previously hidden stockpile of government debt. Debt levels are how as high as 130% and fears in the market are that Senegal will need to restructure. An IMF mission has spent the past few weeks here investigating the sustainability of Senegal’s debt, and have left the market speculating as to what their conclusion is. No deal has been agreed yet with the IMF, but the Senegal authorities are keen to point out to international investors that their investment is money good. I’m here for a couple of days of meetings with some high-profile figures to establish for myself exactly what the outcome is going to be. But for now, it’s time to relax, kick back, and enjoy the wonderful Senegalese hospitality.
