Transcript
So my name is Matt Brady. I’ve been at the firm since May of 2015, which will be ten years this coming May, which is crazy to think about. I work on the client service team in institutional IM, and I’m a senior associate on the team.
What do your daily responsibilities look like?
My day-to-day can really depend on the day. I would say our number one priority is to meet with clients and to host portfolio review meetings. So that’s definitely the number one duty, and that can happen a couple of times a week, especially in a quarter-end month, we’re very heavy with client review meetings.
What appealed to you about William Blair?
William Blair, I would say from the outset, was just a best-in-class firm. Coming out of undergrad, I really just wanted to work, like anyone would, for one of the best firms in town. And William Blair really struck every single category.
But outside of that, I think it’s the culture and the people that I’ve met, maybe through interviewing or even before interviewing, it was just right away, “Wow, these are intelligent people, they’re smart, they’re quick, and this is the place I want to be.”
How do you handle self-doubt or insecurities?
The thing that I think I pride myself on is just always having an optimistic attitude. Maybe you’re giving a public speech, everyone is probably a little nervous and insecure. You just have to tell yourself, “Hey, everyone else has probably felt this way,” and just be optimistic and do the best that you can.
What’s an unexpected hobby or passion of yours?
Don’t make fun of me for stating this, but I am a huge “Survivor” fan. The show “Survivor” with Jeff Probst. I’m actually in a fantasy league with my college buddies, and we battle twice a year in the fall and the spring to see who’s going to be the “sole survivor” and take down the tournament.
What does leadership mean to you?
To be a good leader is someone who can really connect with their employees, and they almost are connecting as a player-coach. They’ve done that job, or they’ve kind of done that journey already in the past.
How do you define happiness?
I would define happiness as finally realizing that you can just stop, and you’ve done enough, and you are truly happy. If you keep wanting more or you don’t feel comfortable, maybe you’re just not happy. So I think finding comfort in your situation is happiness.
