FACES OF INVESTMENT MANAGEMENT

I grew up on the near north side of Chicago, in the now demolished Cabrini-Green housing project. When I graduated from high school, I wanted to go to a four-year college but couldn’t afford it, so I started working in the mail room of a brokerage firm.

I was born in South Africa, which was going through a very tumultuous period. After a violent episode on my way to school, my mom finally said “I don’t want to raise my kids in this environment,” and we moved to the Netherlands.

I was born in Argentina, and my childhood was marked by the dictatorship. There was so much hardship and danger, one day
we left—nine of us, including my grandparents—without telling anybody.

My parents came to the United States from Mexico when they were in their mid-teens. I was one of only two Mexican kids in my class. I looked different and I had different food in my lunch. It was a culture shock.

We often utilize cross-sectional teams to promote innovation. Working groups include members across different roles, expertise, and age to seek new ideas in support of our goals.
Curiosity
I love pursuing new information and testing my assumptions against new perspectives. Understanding how the world is changing and where our companies fit is a fascinating exercise.

Seeking New Opportunities
We’re always looking to uncover cutting-edge business models, so our global equity team looked for a new way to make it easy and fun to identify these opportunities by creating a space for what the team calls “new company discovery,” where research associates lead periodic discussions of newly discovered companies and emerging themes. Ultimately, the goal is to identify future investment opportunities for our portfolios.
Our learning lunches are where ideas go to procreate. We agree to a topic; often it’s the most interesting podcast someone listened to over the weekend or a book someone read. Then we book lunch at a restaurant and people come prepared. It’s a way to engage in spirited debate and learn some new things.
Jay Kannan, CFA
RESEARCH ANALYST, GLOBAL EQUITY TEAM
Our leadership teams foster a culture that rewards curiosity. Only in this way can we promote an environment in which consistent alpha generation can flourish.
Engagement
Every level of the management that I have experienced so far in my 11 months here makes you feel valued as not only a team member but as an individual as well. The overall morale and culture of the people who work here is very positive and encouraging.
